In August 2026, EVs became Australia's single biggest-selling powertrain — ahead of petrol, diesel and hybrid. Whichever way you look at it, electric driving has gone mainstream.
According to VFACTS data, 27,078 new EVs were delivered in August — outselling petrol (25,824), diesel (23,608) and hybrid (18,662) individually, and pushing battery electric to a record 24.9% share of the entire new-car market. It's no longer a niche choice; it's the way Australia is now buying cars.
If you've been weighing up an EV, or already have one sitting in the driveway without a proper charging setup, now's a good time to sort it out — and that's where we come in.
The plug you charge from makes a bigger difference than most people expect:
| 10A "granny" leadcomes standard with most EVs | ~2.4kW | ~10–15km of range per hour — fine as a backup, painfully slow as your only option |
| 7kW single-phasethe most common home installation | ~7kW | ~40km of range per hour — a full charge comfortably overnight |
| 22kW three-phasemost Aus EVs actually cap at 11kW | ~11kW | ~60–70km of range per hour — the fastest most home setups will use |
A 22kW three-phase charger doesn't guarantee 22kW charging — your car's onboard AC charger sets the real limit, and most EVs sold in Australia top out around 11kW even on three-phase power. Figures above are approximate and vary by vehicle.
The right charger and setup can make a real difference to your running costs. Here's what's worth knowing:
Your charger automatically ramps up and down to track your solar production, so the car draws power from the sun first and tops up from the grid only when it needs to.
Set your charger to use only the excess solar you'd otherwise export to the grid for a low feed-in tariff — effectively charging your car on power you're already generating for free.
No solar? No problem. Many energy retailers now offer discounted overnight or EV-specific rates — a smart charger can be scheduled to charge automatically during those cheaper windows.
